Bowyer, Camping World Chevy Overcome Setback to
Claim Top-10 in Phoenix

Race/Date: Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 – April 11, 2008- Location: Phoenix International - Raceway – Avondale, Ariz. - Start Position: 10th - Finish Position: Eighth - Points Position: First

AVONDALE, Ariz. – Clint Bowyer, driver of the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet, rallied from a late-race pit-road speeding penalty to finish eighth in Friday night’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

As he was exiting the service lane following the Camping World racing team’s final pit stop of the night, NASCAR reportedly clocked Bowyer’s blue and gold No. 2 Chevy traveling in excess of the designated 45 mph speed limit on pit road. As a result, Bowyer was forced to relinquish his fourth position in the running order and drop back to 13th, the last car on the lead lap.

Despite having to heed the penalty, Bowyer snared five positions in the closing 19 laps to pick up his sixth top-10 finish of the eight-race old 2008 season. At the same time, the Emporia, Kan., native maintained the top spot in the NASCAR Nationwide Series point standings. The six-time Nationwide Series winner leads Carl Edwards by 24 points.

Kyle Busch won the race and Edwards, Bowyer’s closet rival in the Nationwide Series point’s race, finished second. Denny Hamlin was third, Kevin Harvick was fourth and David Ragan finished fifth. Fellow Richard Childress Racing (RCR) teammate Stephen Leicht was seventh. Jeff Burton, driving RCR’s No. 29 Holiday Inn Chevy, didn’t fare as well after two separate on-track incidents left him 31st in the final rundown.

Next weekend, the NASCAR Nationwide Series heads south of the border to visit the largest metropolitan area in the western hemisphere – Mexico City.

Live coverage of the Corona Mexico 200 presented by Banamex from Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will be televised live on ESPN Sunday, April 20 beginning at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The first road course race of 2008 will be broadcast live on the Motor Racing Network (MRN) and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for round nine of the 2008 NASCAR Nationwide Series championship will be televised live on ESPN2 Saturday, April 19 at 11:30 a.m. EDT. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will air qualifying updates live.

  • CLINT BOWYER QUOTES

“I’m not sure where that speeding penalty came from but it is what it is I guess. The Camping World Chevy was definitely a top-five car but, all things considered, we’ll take eighth and go on to Mexico City next weekend. I feel like I am getting better at road racing so I’m excited to get down there and get going.”
