Nudge Aside, Bowyer BB&T Chevy Finish
Race/Date: Camping World RV Rental 250 – June 21, 2008 - Location: The Milwaukee Mile – West Allis, Wis. - Start Position: Sixth - Finish Position: Third - WEST ALLIS, Wis. – With less than 25 laps left in Saturday night’s Camping World RV Rental 250, Clint Bowyer was showing the way and in position to capture his second NASCAR Nationwide Series checkered flag of 2008. But, as the he drove through the apex of turns one and two, contact from eventual winner Carl Edwards shot Bowyer up the race track costing him what looked to be an all but assured trip to Victory Lane at the historic Milwaukee Mile. While the loss proved to be a bitter pill to swallow for the six-time winner on NASCAR’s junior tour, Bowyer still finished third and increased his point lead to 188 markers over second-place Brad Keselowski. While Bowyer, along with four other of Saturday night’s starters, was in Sonoma, Calif., preparing for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event, Stephen Leicht practiced and qualified the BB&T Chevy. Leicht’s effort and feedback were paramount in getting the burgundy and gold No. 2 machine dialed in for the division’s annual stop at “America’s Legendary Oval.” With Bowyer estimated to arrive in Milwaukee shortly after 5 p.m. local time and a 4:35 p.m. scheduled start for qualifying, Leicht navigated the flat, one-mile oval in Bowyer’s absence during time trials and turned in the sixth-fastest time of the session. By rule, Bowyer was forced to drop to 36th for the opening green flag but it didn’t take long for the BB&T Chevy to work its way to the front. After just the first lap, Bowyer picked up seven positions and was all the way up to 16th when the first yellow flag of the night was displayed on lap 18. While he mentioned the car was a little loose in the early going, the two-time Sprint Cup Series winner powered into the top 10 before making his first pit stop of night during the race’s second caution flag on lap 56. Trouble in the pits cost Bowyer three spots during the exchange but, over the next 36 laps, the car swung from loose to tight preventing him from reclaiming any lost real estate. Back on pit road during the third caution flag, just prior to the one-third mark, Bowyer’s crew chief Dan Deeringhoff called for tires, fuel and a chassis adjustment in an effort to remedy the team’s ill-handling machine. It didn’t take long, following the second round of service, for Bowyer to establish a comfort level and with 100 laps to go, the BB&T Chevy was running sixth and every bit as fast as the leaders. As the laps clicked off, Bowyer continued to reel in the front runners and after the team’s final trip to pit lane, Richard Childress Racing’s flagship No. 2 entry was third on the scoring pylon. With 41 laps remaining in the 250-lap event, Bowyer flashed by Joey Lagano for second and charged into the lead one lap later. He paced the field for the next 14 circuits before the fateful nudge from Edwards on lap 226 cost the 29-year-old driver his second win of the season. The contact shuffled Bowyer back to third where he raced throughout the closing laps. Edwards went on to win the race beating Lagano by just over a second-and-a-half. Bowyer was third, David Ragan was fourth and David Reutimann rounded out the top-five finishers. Bowyer’s RCR teammate Scott Wimmer crossed the stripe sixth. Next weekend, the Nationwide Series heads back east as NASCAR’s No. 2 circuit visits the “Magic Mile” for the division’s annual stop at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Live coverage of the Camping World RV Sales 200 will take the green flag Saturday, June 28 at 2:30 p.m. EasternDaylight Time. The race will be televised live on ABC and broadcast from coast to coast on the Motor Racing Network and Sirius Satellite Radio. Qualifying for round 18 of the NASCAR Nationwide Series championship will be televised live on SPEED the same day at 10 a.m. EDT. MRN and Sirius Satellite Radio will broadcast qualifying updates live.
"The BB&T Chevrolet was fast but, unfortunately, the win got taken from us. We race a long season and things like that happen. You've got to remember the shoe will be on the other foot when we race those guys some day. It was still a good points day for the BB&T Chevrolet. Dan (crew chief Dan Deeringhoff) and Stephen (Leicht) did a great job getting the car set up so I really appreciate all their hard work. I think we’ll be in good shape when we go to New Hampshire next weekend.” This site is
